This article regards the book as an object of/an object in a sensitive world, open as much to our percep- tion as to our manipulation, and it considers reading and, in particular, «recreational reading» as a social, situated, ritual practice belonging to a phenomenal field. Starting with its key elements and with the social, material and ritualistic conditions involved in its enactment, with how it is framed and what meaning it is given, the article presents an analysis of a practice, reading, and of the way it is passed on socially and taught, especially in schools.
