My research team focuses on a variety of collective systems composed of interacting agents, spanning from neurons/neuroglia in the brain to people in a crowd, from insects in a colony to robots in a swarm. The overarching aim is to understand how cognitive processes like attention, decision making or categorisation emerge in a system from the numerous interactions among the system components, possibly organised in complex network topologies. The insights gathered in this endeavour are exploited to synthesise cyber-physical systems like robot swarms and cognitive radio networks to optimally deal with the complexity inherent to real-world applications.
