Short profile:
Roberta Ferrario is a researcher at the Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the CNR and she works at the Laboratory for Applied Ontology in Trento. She has accomplished her PhD in Philosophy in 2003, under the scope of a co-tutorship program between the Universities of Milan (Italy) and Strasbourg (France). She has spent an academic year at the Suppes Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Science and Technology of Stanford University. Back in Trento, she has worked on ontology of mind, of organizations and of services. Lately, her research interests have been on ontology of socio-technical systems, on the integration of ontological and probabilistic approaches and on digital humanities. She has been PI of the VisCoSo project (2012-2016), a three year "Research Unit" project grant awarded 600K euros by the Autonomous Province of Trento, since 2022 she is unit leader of the BRiO PRIN project and since 2023 of the SMARTEST PRIN project.
She has been Co-Editor-in-chief of the International journal Applied Ontology (IOS Press) from 2017 to 2022 and member of the Executive Council of the International Association of Ontology and its Applications (IAOA, 2016-2020), of which she is now Advisory Board member; she has been General Chair of the 11th and the 12th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 2020 and 2021) and has been PC Co-chair of FOIS 2016 and co-founder of series of workshops like SWODCH (Semantic Web and Ontology Design for Cultural Heritage), WODHSA (Workshop on Ontologies for Digital Humanities and their Social Analysis), CONTACT (Computer vision + ONTologies: Applied Cross-disciplinary Techniques) and FOMI (Formal Ontology Meets Industry).
She's author of a monograph and more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters on social ontology, ontology of services, ontology of mental entities, digital humanities, philosophy of language.
